From UK’s ugliest dog to movie star: Meet Dogpool, Deadpool & Wolverine’s best character

Deadpool & Wolverine is finally out today, and after her hard slay on the red carpet last week, all anyone cares about is the film’s best character by far: Dogpool.

The dog in Deadpool and Wolverine plays a character called Dogpool and is Wade Wilson’s next sidekick. She is played by Peggy, a cross between a Pug and a Chinese Crested. Peggy is six years old and lives in East Yorkshire. She’s pretty hairless, apart from a tuft on her face and ears. You’ll always see her with her tongue just swinging about out her mouth.

So who is Peggy, Britain’s ugliest dog turned movie star playing Dogpool?

Peggy was adopted online near the end of 2018. She was six months old at the time, and she was the runt of an accidental litter. Peggy was named after her owner’s great-grandmother. She is a crossbreed between a Pug and a Chinese Crested Dog, also known as a Pugese.

In 2023, Peggy entered into an ugly dog competition held by a photography printing firm called ParrotPrint. She won, earning the official title of “Britain’s ugliest dog”.

Upon winning her title as UK’s ugliest dog, Peggy’s owner Holly Middleton told the BBC at the time: “Even though some people find Peggy’s unusual appearance strange, and in rare cases off-putting, and despite Peggy winning the ugliest dog in the UK title, we think she is beautiful both inside and out, and wouldn’t change her for the world.”

Due to her crowning success in the ugliest dog competition, Peggy was scouted to become an actress and movie star in Deadpool & Wolverine. She appeared on BBC Breakfast talking about her fame and then became somewhat of an influencer, with her own Instagram account with over 216k followers where she posts a lot of relatable content.

It was after this she got spotted to play Dogpool. Explaining the whole casting process in an interview with Empire Magazine, Ryan Reynolds said: “Her real name is Peggy, and she won the award for Britain’s Ugliest Dog. The reason why I was a huge proponent for her was because she feels like the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson.

“It was, just like many things during the writing process, a tiny little afterthought, and it grew. It was one of those things where you just keep listening to the movie, and Dogpool became a staple.”

Last week she appeared on the carpet, in full costume, with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and last night attended the UK premiere. I cannot wait to see our Peggy’s next project x
